Today we did a stop at the Crystal Gold Mine in Idaho when we were on our way to a campground near Glacier National Park.
First we went on a tour where we had to wear helmets.
We got to learn about how they made the mines. We learn that people panned for gold in the river and went upstream as they panned. When the water suddenly disappeared in to the mountain they decided to explore if there was any gold inside the mountain. They used dynamite to make paths inside and they knew that usually when there was quartz there would be gold.
They have very little information about the people that started the Crystal Gold Mine and they held it secret for many years. We saw a lot of rock formations that had formed because of the water that is pouring in for over a hundred years.
After the tour we got to go and pan for gold! I found some gold and a lot of different gems in all kinds of colors like black, white, purple, red, orange and so on.
It was awesome to gold pan (again!).
